Styling notes
  • Draw the eye up with detailed tops, boat necks and statement shoulders.
  • Choose darker, streamlined bottoms and A-line or bootcut shapes.
  • Structured jackets that end at the hip balance your proportions.

Body shape is a styling guide, not a verdict, every body is wonderful. Use it to find cuts you enjoy wearing, then ignore any "rule" that doesn't feel like you.

The five classic body shapes

Body-shape categories compare the relative width of your bust, waist and hips. They're a styling shortcut, a quick way to find cuts that balance your proportions, not a judgement about any body being better than another.

  • Hourglass: bust and hips balanced, waist clearly defined.
  • Pear / triangle: hips wider than the bust.
  • Inverted triangle: shoulders or bust wider than the hips.
  • Rectangle: bust, waist and hips a similar width.
  • Apple / round: width carried around the midsection.

How we work it out

The tool compares your measurements: if your waist is the widest, it reads as apple; if bust and hips are close and the waist is much smaller, hourglass; a wider hip or bust points to pear or inverted triangle; and similar measurements throughout read as rectangle.

Use it to shop smarter, not to follow rules

Knowing your shape helps you pick pieces that fit with less tailoring and fewer returns, useful when you're building a capsule wardrobe. But style is personal: the best "rule" is wearing what makes you feel like yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure for body shape?

Measure your bust around the fullest part, your waist at the narrowest point of your torso, and your hips around the fullest part with feet together. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.

What's the difference between hourglass and rectangle?

Both have balanced bust and hips, but an hourglass has a clearly smaller waist (roughly 25% narrower than the hips), while a rectangle's waist is close in width to the bust and hips.

Can my body shape change?

Yes, weight changes, fitness, pregnancy and age can all shift your proportions over time. It's worth re-measuring every so often, especially before a wardrobe refresh.
